Police Surveillance Droid by dangeruss Police Surveillance Droid by dangeruss
Dateline 2034 - San Francisco CA

The last of these now 10 year old SFPD surveillance droids are now being decommissioned. Purchased at enormous cost in 2024, these ineffective autonomous "streetwalkers" were supposed to decrease inner-city crime by roving the streets reporting activities and providing a police presence.

Criminals and mischief seekers found it was easy to defeat, topple and even blind them with a well tossed paint balloon. In theory the droids worked well in recording, identifying incidents and individuals and calling for the real police. In practice, they were a dismal failure. Their non-lethal sonic system for incapacitating criminals was indiscriminate, causing painful effects for anyone within 50 feet.

The public mistrusted the entire system after the 2029 window peeping / recording scandal that lead to the firing of police chief Huang Li.

Created with Autodesk Inventor, 3D Studio MAX, Vray, Photoshop.

Based on a sketch by Junji Okubo

Says everything one can say about the ineffectiveness of the thing when a vandal has actually tagged the surveillance robot, presumably without the thing noticing.

Some inner pieces look brand-new. In particular the pneumatic cylinders are not greasy enough for decommissioned droids: way too shiny.

That because the hydraulic seals continuously wipe it clean. Even filthy construction equipment (as long as it's being used) looks like that.

It still leaves a residual film that would slightly darken the color (less reflective).

Very imaginative! I love the backstory, it puts faith back in good old humanity in a humorously ironic way.

Cool! Lovely texturing...I would suggest a bit more tweaks on the background, so the model stands out better. Now it kind of blends with the model. Why San Francisco?

Reminds me of the bots from Deus Ex, would fit really well in there.
My only criticism, if I may be so bold, is that some parts, like the pneumatic/damper thing looks way cleaner than the rest of the bot. Otherwise both the backstory and the scene is as awesome as all your work :)

That's true for the chromed piston, but is that the case with the tube shaped housing it slides into as well? I was thinking about the piston casing being dirty in a subtle way like on this pic: [link]

METAL GEAR!

I have a serious question though wouldn't these be rather large and be fairly obvious?
it would be more feasible as a drone that would be about 4-5 feet tall with an extending neck kind of like like an EOD bot on steroids.

Just a thought, Awesome art regardless.

You know a few years ago I would have said that a quad rotor camera never going to happen.

I love when real life is stranger than science fiction.

Got his book "Industrial Divinities" always close by. Highly recommended. In addition to non-combat mechs like this guy, he has a lot of Steel Battalion designs in there too. I'm sure you'd dig it. (Only available in Japanese tho).

Beyond the amazing modeling, your back story is great. Right in line w/ the design. Graffiti and other detailing is brilliant!

If that doesn't work for ya, it could turn by independently reversing wheels on the other side. In that way it could turn on a dime, like a Segway does.

then i saw it was partially made in inventor :)

looks very good

Now I don't know the background story for your design here, but as someone who himself is writing a reality based SciFi story which plays in 2064, this seems very interesting to me.

With first look at the image, I thought "this would never serve the intended purpose". So interestingly, that seems to be exactly the case by your description. I must say, this is a pretty dangerous looking robot, which would honestly scare the hell outta me, but not being effective. So the design combined with your description really makes it interesting.
